Do NOT skip Grizzleheim and Wintertusk. You will be locked out of many spells and nearly all of your school pets if you do. (The friend who told you that gave you very bad advice.)
Instead of trying to short-cut the game, go back and complete the quests that will open up Nidavellir for you.
