Fleeing battle and returning has no effect on battle drops unless you flee and return after the boss is dead but before the battle is complete. So if you flee and your friend kills the boss before you get back and there are minions still alive, you won't get a drop. If you die after a boss is killed, the only way you gets a drop is if you are healed by another player before the minions are killed.
