There is another kind of magic in the Spiral, in addition to the seven primary schools and the three Astral schools – it is an underlying, reality-defining and bending magic known as Shadow Magic. Shadow Magic can only be trained by spending Training Points, and cannot be learned as a Primary School of focus.
Shadow Magic is learned from Sofia DarkSide, a wise mouse mage located in the Eclipse Tower in Moon Cliffs. You will only be able to access her after you have completed the quest "Touching Shadow" and after you defeat her, she will teach you Shadow Magic.
Shadow Magic is so powerful and so dangerous that Bartleby and Grandmother Raven told Merle Ambrose not to delve into it, and especially not teach it to his students. Shadow magic was forbidden for it touches the true essence of the Spiral. This is the forbidden knowledge that Morganthe has so long coveted.
Shadow Magic enhances the spells you cast while the Shadow Magic spell is in effect. It is unstable and difficult to control. Players will need to learn how to best manage Shadow Magic and learn how to harness its very powerful benefits.
There are 3 different Shadow Self spells. You will be awarded one of them, based on your school. The other 2 can be learned by spending Training Points at Sofia DarkSide.
Ah but there's so much more...
Shadow Pips Shadow Magic cannot be cast with regular or power pips, but must be cast with special new Shadow Pips. You will only have a chance of receiving Shadow pips if you have trained Shadow Magic.
Backlash All Shadow Spells run the risk of Backlash Damage. When a player casts a Shadow Damage spell, a Shadow Aura appears. That Shadow Aura will change based on the player's actions. The angrier looking the Shadow Aura, the stronger the Backlash will be once the Shadow Magic spell expires. Damage caused by Backlash ignores all resistances, shields and modifiers!
PvP Shadow Magic can be used in all PvP, young Wizards, so this should make things very interesting....
is shadow magic hard to get cause i dont wanna go through another quest like the one for the school aura
I don't think you have a choice. It's part of the storyline. The boss for it is difficult, so you will need help. You can port in and mark though, so even if you die you can potion and port back into battle.
The shadow magic isn't worth getting. One of the shadow spells is another 25+ healing outgoing which is dumb cause theres already 3 of those in the game you can get without getting backlash from the shadow spell. The other one gives 80 critical block and -10 incoming, but all the damage your team mates take that is reduced is given to the player casting the spell instead of it being for your team mates and yourself. (useless spell). And the last one gives you 10+ pierce and +10 damage boost. but its useless aswell cause you dont get any of the pierce until after you have attacked and used all your blades up. all 3 are useless and a waste of training points which is depressing since we have all been waiting for something amazing to come to the game besides just another goofy world to run through and a level increase. v.v

Hi Prof Greyrose, Could you clear up a few things for me regarding the quest for Shadow Magic? Who gives you the quest "Touching Shadow". Is it someone from the Bastion and what level do Wizards need to be? My balance wizard is currently questing on the moon cliffs and is about to go into the dungeon to use the lever that will open the door to the bee village. Am I close to getting the touching shadow quest, I have just leveled up to level 92. Thanks for your help James Dreamweaver lvl 92

Totally wrong about Shrike, it gives +50 pierce +10 damage and -25 heal PLUS everytime you attack it gives all players +10 pierce spear. That's above the +50 it already gives. It's simple to see in action, with shrike in place, a tower shield says "Pierced" and shows 0 as the resist boost. Also every school gets one spell for free. Every spell has it's usefulness. Before you judge them so harshly I suggest you actually clear the Eclipse Tower and try out the spells for yourself. You claim it's useless, yet many PvP players are crying that Shrike is way overpowered. This leads me to the conclusion that you don't have the spells and don't really know what you're talking about when you call them useless.

totally agree with your post. I have all 3 shadow spells on my storm and death wizards. I mostly use the " Shrike " spell. It does a lot of damage with that +50 pierce. cuts through resist, and helps. I call it a new toy to play with.
can any one tell me how to get the shadow magic quest I have went past moon cliffs and I am about level 94 and I can't find it and no one is telling me how to do it so please some one tell me.
These spells are interesting because they give us incredible advantages, but they come at a cost. Anyone using a Shadow Spell will have to deal with the Backlash that it gives. This is damage which ignores your resist. It can be more or less, depending on what you do while the Shadow Magic is active! The Shadow Shrike, for instance, deals LESS backlash when you do things it “likes” such as casting blades. But if you do things that the Shrike Spell dislikes, such as healing, it increases the amount of backlash. Backlash starts out at 30% for all Shadow Spells. This means when the spell ends, it will deal damage to you for 30% of your current health. This ignores resist and damage modifiers. Doing something your Shadow Self “likes” will remove 10% backlash. Doing something it dislikes will add 10% backlash. Doing something neutral will not add or remove any backlash. You will get a minimum of 10% Backlash no matter what you do, and a maximum of 70%. We have added specific information below the spell pictures.
I am lost. I have it and it showed up in my deck I took them out and can't find them Huh? Where do I find the cards what school are they kept in?
Until you quit and restart the spells show up at the end of the All Spells. After you have logged back in after getting them, a new shadow icon appears in your deck at the end of the other schools.
Is Shadow Magic bugged? I noticed that I was hitting for less damage while in Shadow Shrike. I sent to fight Lady Blackmore to test it out. I had my regular gear on and hit her with a single blade firecat, then I fought again and hit her with a single blade firecat while in Shadow form and did 66 less damage. So same clothes on, same blade, same spell, but 66 less damage while in Shadow Shrike form. That seems very off, especially with the added 10% damage. If I'm going to hit for less with this form, then it's pretty pointless to have. I may only need it to burn through shields, but being a fire wizard I have little problem with shields.

Spells like firecat have a damage range, meaning that they can either hit for their lowest damage, their highest damage or somewhere in between. More than likely you got a lower damage roll when you used it in shadow shrike form than you did when you used it in regular wizard form.
If you can, then try fixed damage spells such as efreet for instance that are guaranteed to hit for the same base damage amount each and every time that you use it.
