If they don't sell it in future Christmas's to come you can still get the pet. Just find someone that will hatch with you so you can get it. I hatched with a friend so they could get it, and they got it, in fact they wound up with a better snowball than My original.
It is not a guaranteed chance. You are more likely to get a snowball if the pet you use to hatch has a higher base pedigree than a snowball pet. So if you hatch a sea dragon (pedigree 72) with someone's snowball (pedigree 60) you are slightly more likely to get a snowball. The problem is that you could hatch 30 times with people who have a snowball and not get one, or you could get one the first time.
