Pets and Fish

I'm guessing this has probably been asked before, but is there any thought being given to allowing us to feed unwanted fish to our pets?

There are only so many vendors that buy fish, and they're only in a few select worlds worlds. When I'm fishing and I hit my limit, the only way to get fish I don't want out of my basket is to make a long trek to find a vendor, or toss them out. It just seems a bit wasteful to me.

I guess the challenge I see is coming up with a suitable reward table. Most fish don't sell for a whole lot of money individually, so coming up with a lesser value for pet feeding may be a challenge. Personally, it's not even the reward I care about. I just don't think a responsible angler tosses whole fish on the ground and walks away, virtual or otherwise.

I think it's probably not offered because it's a bit too "graphic". You'd be feeding a "living" thing to another "living" thing. The same reason (I'm guessing) that you can't feed unwanted pets to other pets.
My solution would be to offer some sort of Catch and Release Program. Maybe even work another series of badges in along with it. A badge for releasing 50 fish (Free the Fish?), then 100 fish (Benevolent Angler), then 500 fish (Fish Liberator?) etc. The only limitation would be you'd have to be near a body of water in order to free the fish.

True. Again, virtual or not, it's the role playing part of the game... using your imagination to envision what is happening.

I had thought of the release thing too, though my thought was the option to release an unwanted fish at the time you catch it, similar to what you would do irl. There's no point wandering around with a fish you don't want when you can just send it back right away. In that case, maybe you could also get 1 point of energy back too.

Releasing fish from your basket would be an interesting thing because what if you're near water and you're releasing a lava fish? Or vice versa. Dekois and cudas are in both, as now also are Schools of Fish. Could be interesting trying to figure out what kind of restrictions to put on where you can and can't release fish... if any restrictions would be required. Introducing a species of fish to a foreign habitat could have devastating consequences to the environment.

I haven't gotten to where this is an issue for me yet, but I do like fishing and the fish release idea would be cool.

LOL!! I assume you're being sarcastic on the environmental impact angle. I wasn't suggesting that you could introduce a Hard Albacore into the Commons pond so he could terrorize all the other fish. (Although that paints a pretty funny mental image now that you bring it up!) "Listen up you fish... there's a new boss in town see!" My thought was that it would just splash and disappear similar to a "he got away" in fishing. But anyway, releasing fish wouldn't have to be restricted because as you mentioned, you can catch normal (water based) fish in lava as it is now. Why they don't come out of the lava crispy fried and delicious is beyond me. And yes, you could release them at the time you catch them or just release a few if you need to make room in your bag. I do a fair amount of crafting using recipes with fish as an ingredient so I sometimes have a need to save some of the normally "worthless" fish. I'll often have ten or more Frost Dekois or Lifecudas in my inventory for crafting purposes.

Yeah, I've been watching a lot of Border Security lately, seeing all of the things that Canadian and Australian border security agents seize because of environmental and disease concerns. Just carried some of it over.

I've got most of the recipes, but as of yet haven't done any crafting with the "junk" fish. That will cause a real dilemma if I ever do start crafting those items because now that there are 122 species I have so many other fish that I don't want to dispose of, but I'm too cheap to spend Crowns on aquariums to save them. With 12 wizards, it gets a tad bit expensive.

I guess it's inevitable, one day I'm going to have to start disposing of fish I want to keep and just be satisfied with the record of them existing in my Angler's Tome. I just hope there isn't another fishing update for a while. I'm only a few fish away from having caught all of them with every wizard again. I need a break from fishing to finish up some quests.

I'm with you on the fish thing. Not only have I nearly caught them all but I also have about 3/4 of them in aquariums in various homes with my goal being to eventually have my own little sea world with every different fish on display. Luckily, I'm to the point where I can sell off virtually all of the repeat fish I get that aren't recipe ingredients.
