Shadow Critical & Jewels (what's the use?)

I've been wondering this for a while now: why are Shadow Critical Jewels even in the game?

The 2 shadow pip hits cannot critical and the only other shadow hits are the wand hits. Why would you socket these jewels just to critical a wand hit?

If there is something I am missing or a reason behind this, please rely.
