Question about fights.

Just wondering about how the shields work. Yes, I know WHAT they do, but is the resulting damage ongoing or cumlative? For example, let's say I cast a Wraith with a Death Blade, Feint and Weakness spell on me. There's two ways I see it going...

1.) 500 + 425 (85% of 500) = 925

or

2.) 500 + 40% = 700 - 25% = 525 + 70% = 892.

The second. As you can see one shield or weakness can make dramatic drops in things.
