While you are farming for those permanent mounts you can also buy temporary, time-limited mounts from Prospector Zeke in most worlds. Do note that these mounts do have a lower speed boost.
Finally if you go to the crowns shop and sort mounts by gold- there are a few that can be purchased for in-game gold instead of crowns. Some examples include: Chestnut Pony, Blue Dragon, Enchanted Broom, Royal Lioness.
