Summoning out of battle

A couple times now, I've seen people use spells outside of a battle.

One time, I was looking for a wisp, when I saw a Thunder Snake appear outside of the library in the Commons in Wizard City. It used the attack where it breathes electricity at a foe, but it didn't actually do anything in this case. Then it vanished.

Another time, right in front of the door from Unicorn Way to the Commons, I saw someone standing next to an actual, full-sized unicorn, not one of those little things you keep as pets. It had no name over it. When I was there again today, I didn't see it, so I'm assuming somebody was casting it as a spell.

Is this some sort of glitch, a cheat, or is it simply a way of showing off spells that I don't know how to use? I'd appreciate an answer.

Ok, you know that some wizards can only learn certin spells(depending on school.) Like only a life wizard can learn the spell Rebirth. Well sometimes, what you see is from other wizards trying those kind of spells. The one thing i dont understand is Storm Snake that you saw infront of the library. Are you sure that you saw it in the front of the library instead of Cyclops Lane?

These are not spell summons. They are part of quests given by your school trainer to learn new spells. At some point, you will be told to go to a certain place to summon a creature to give you either magic words or a task. Once you've spoken to it, the creature will disappear. When you've done whatever you were supposed to do, your school trainer will give you a new spell that you cannot learn otherwise. These creatures can be seen by everyone, but only the person on the quest will be able to talk to it.

All of those you describe are from a role-playing 'summoning' as part of a quest from the school teacher. Go to such a place, summon a school spirit, interact with it, and gain the knowledge for a new spell. The unicorn is a life quest, the thunder snake is a storm quest, etc.

The unicorn is a life quest.

The unicorn, rather strangely, is for a Myth quest.

Oh. I know about those. I just didn't know that everyone could see them. Thanks for the answer!
