Keep in mind, once you've owned an item, the shopkeepers consider it to be 'used' and therefore of substantially lesser value. They don't resell the used items and therefore just buy them from you to maintain good will, and to keep you coming back as a customer.
If the item served you well while you owned it, you probably got your gold's worth. :)
