Re: What are the best spells to use on Malistaire?
1) If you are death you will absolutely need to bring prisms, as he is 80% resistant to death damage. His minions are 40% resistant to death damage.
2) Generally you want to use the biggest single hit spell you know, or as others have suggested, treasure cards with an even bigger spell than you know. Stick to spells of your primary school. Enhance the damage with as many blades and traps as you can. It is quite possible to take down Malistaire in a single attack if you have enough blades and traps.
3) Malistaire appears with three death minions. You want to deal with the minions before taking out Malistaire himself. It is best to use Area of Effect (AoE, sometimes known as "attack all") spells for this so you attack them all at once. Stack up blades before casting the AoE so it does more damage, but don't bother with traps at this point as casting traps on every minion takes too long. In addition to your school blade be sure to train either elemental or spirit blade (depending whether your primary school is elemental or spirit) from Niles the balance tree so you have at least two learned blades that stack.
4) You will have to get through several other fights in the Great Spyre instance before you can get to Malistaire.
5) If you have the Zeke quest be sure to pick up the stone rose in the last room of the Great Spyre before leaving the instance.
6) The Great Spyre instance is very difficult. It can be soloed but I don't recommend trying. Use the team up button and/or call in some buddies from your friends list for help.

Does anyone know what the best spells to use on Malistaire in Dragonspyre is at level 40?
I soloed Malistaire as a Balance wizard. It was very challenging, but possible to do. I'd recommend the following:
0) If you don't go first, flee, recoup mana at the Basilica, then continue the dungeon.
1) Before hitting Malistaire, eliminate his minions. They have 1100 health each. Balance Blade, Balance Blade treasure card, and Chastisement aura treasure card should allow you to wipe them out. Treat their health as roughly 1400 if you're calculating your damage -- you will likely be weakened when you hit.
2) Heal up using Helping Hands and Pixies for a few rounds. Hopefully, you have a few spells trained in Life or Myth and can add in some shields to blunt the big Death spells. If not, use Tower Shields.
3) Jewel of the Feint amulet, plus trained Feint spell, plus Feint TC. These all stack, and will result in a massive hit. Use a Judgment treasure card for 125 damage per pip.
Gear: Amulet of the Feint, best Death resist gear that also adds Balance / universal damage. Treasure Cards: Balance Blade (you can craft this!), Chastisement, Feint, Judgment, Ra. Main Deck: Feint, Helping Hands (x2), Pixie (x2), Balance Blade, Bladestorm, Reshuffle, death or universal shields (x3)
